FORT
KNOX POLICY ROUTER
The
Fort Knox Policy Router provides a solid line of defense plus ease of use
for your network. It uses a stripped down BSD operating system and
a Java interface. The unit comes standard with Intel 10/100-Mbps Ethernet
cards, and an analog modem also provides out-of-band management. The model
3000 comes with a list price of $4,995. Based
on a modified BSD Unix kernel, Fort Knox is an application-level firewall
and also comes with packet filtering and support for all popular IP services.
The basic system also includes Web caching and spam filtering. For an additional
charge, you can add VPN, bandwidth management, URL blocking (uses The Learning
Co.'s Cyber Patrol content list), SMTP mail server and support for client-based
VPN. The Fort Knox Java-enhanced management tool is topnotch. Not only is everything done from a single location, but you can monitor and manage other firewalls from one console as well as run some of the most comprehensive diagnostics around. You can check all phases of your firewall to help track down communication problems. Fort Knox comes with 10/100-Mbps Ethernet cards to make sure that you can "plug and go" with your current network topology. Alerting
is the only area where Fort Knox isn't at the top of its game. You can
receive only E-mail and pager notifications when an alarm threshold is
reached. Fort Knox comes with a good set of report tools to let you
track all firewall activity. You can go with a lower-priced firewall, but
you won't have as complete a product.
